how to do a cacao ceremony at home

Cacao does not stimulate your nervous system like coffee does. The active stimulant in raw cacao is theobromine.

It’s like caffeine, but its effects are milder and longer lasting.

Cacao is full of happy chemicals that help you feel better, without the jitters.

The spirit of cacao is so powerful for this reason. Pure cacao can help you live in the present moment.

If you’re ready for a transformative experience from the inside out, cacao may be for you!

From a spiritual perspective, it opens your heart space.

This post is all about how to do a cacao ceremony.

How to Create a Sacred Space

The spiritual significance of cacao harkens back to Indigenous Americans. They used this heart-opening medicine to connect to the divine.

It creates an opening to connect to yourself, others, the energy of love, and your ancestry.

Creating a safe space to indulge in ceremonial cacao is about intention setting.

Ceremonial use can begin with your morning practice. Or any time that you have dedicated to your devotional practice.

To create a sacred space:

Step 1: Create space

Create a space where you pray or meditate each day. This can be outside or in front of an altar. It should be somewhere where you won’t be disturbed.

Make this a space dedicated to devotion.

It should be somewhere where it signals to your brain that it’s time to quiet down and tune in.

I have a meditation pillow in front of my altar. And whenever I’m walking up to the altar, I immediately start to feel calmer.

It signals to my brain that I’m going to sit down and be quiet for twenty minutes.

Step 2: Collect Your Favorite Things

Your sacred space should be a place you look forward to visiting. It helps to have a few of your favorite things there.

I have a singing bowl, sage, incense, and some crystals at mine. The items don’t need to be spiritual at all.

The only rule is that your favorite things are in one area and you feel grounded when you sit there.

Step 3: Find Your Inner Zen

Do you feel at peace when you visit your sacred space? Do you feel more grounded?

If not, what changes can you make to it to bring yourself down to Earth? That’s what a sacred space is great for.

You can’t connect with the divine unless you’re grounded. Once you’re grounded, you can tune in and better hear divine guidance.

Connecting to the divine through the ritual of cacao sets a powerful precedence. It welcomes the cacao spirit into your heart space.

What is Ceremonial Grade Cacao?

Ceremonial-grade cacao is minimally processed, which preserves its health benefits. It is often fermented, dried, and roasted at a low temperature.

Some ceremonial-grade cacao is harvested in small quantities to preserve the land. The intention of its use also matters.

There are some cacao producers that grow and distribute it with the intention that it is used in ceremony.

The most important aspect of ceremonial-grade cacao is its intention.

Ceremonial-grade cacao producers take great care in respecting the land, plants, and people involved in the process.

This makes a difference in how the product works for you when you use it.

How To Do a Cacao Ceremony At Home

Indulging in ceremonial cacao drink at home is the perfect way to enjoy it.

Hosting your own cacao ceremony is as easy as visiting your altar or other sacred space.

Make sure that you have a ceremonial setting to enjoy the intuitive benefits of cacao.

A sacred cacao ceremony includes a quiet place to listen to your heart and connect with messages.

Here’s how to do a cacao ceremony at home:

Step 1: Prepare your favorite cacao recipe

I have my go-to recipe listed below. Prepare your cacao with hot water, but not boiling.

You don’t want to cook the cacao as this eliminates the nutritional benefit.

You can also add dried edible flowers, herbs or spices to your recipe. Some people drink it plain, and that is as delicious!

Step 2: Go to your sacred space

This can be a spot in your garden or a space where you meditate. An altar also works great.

Step 3: Heart chakra

Your heart chakra is in the very center of your chest.

Hold your cacao in front of your body sit there for a moment, letting it ground your energy.

Step 4: Drop-In

Close your eyes and take some deep breaths. This is how you start the spiritual connection and begin to tune in.

Keep doing this until you feel more grounded and centered.

Step 5: Start the Ritual

Hold the cup of cacao above your head and say, “As above.”

Lower the cup of cacao to above your lap and say, “So below.”

Raise the cup of cacao to your heart space and say, “As within.”

Extend your arms and the cup away from your body and say, “So without.”

Close your eyes and ask the cacao for a message that you need to hear today.

Keep a journal handy and jot down any insights that come to you.

This ritual came to me in meditation when I was drinking cacao.

It offers balance between the divine and you, and your inner and outer worlds.

I hope you enjoy it!

Cacao for Spiritual Growth

Cacao encourages personal growth is because it connects you with your heart.

When you and your heart are in sync, you are more in tune with your needs.

You make different choices as you become more in tune with your needs.

These choices will lead to more happiness and fulfillment.

Your spiritual practices will also deepen. You may sit with cacao and have an emotional release that you had bottled up.

This type of spiritual ritual is beneficial to your mind, body, and spirit. Each of them benefits from this incredible superfood.

My Personal Ceremonial Cacao Recipe

High-quality ceremonial cacao makes all the difference in a spiritual practice.

This is the cacao that I use.

I love how rich and creamy it is. The first sip of cacao always warms my soul and body from the inside out!

I can’t imagine not including cacao in my mindfulness practice.

I’ve been drinking it for years and I sleep better than I ever have, and have more energy.

My first cacao ceremony at home turned me into a believer and I’ve never looked back!

Here’s my recipe:

1.5 heaping teaspoons of cacao powder.

Hot, but not boiling water. You don’t want to cook the cacao, so use hot water, but not boiling.

1 tbsp maple syrup. You can also use coconut sugar to taste.

Dash of cinnamon (optional)

Some people like to add cayenne pepper which goes so well with cacao. I am not a fan of spice, but if you are, give it a shot!

In the winter, I add a tad of ginger powder for a little bit of kick. Ginger is so good for your immune system too.
