Your energy is your currency. When your energy is low or off, it’s worth looking into whether there’s negative energy around you.

This post is all about how to recognize signs of negative energy around you.

Signs of Negative Energy in a Person

If your emotional state is more volatile, it may indicate the presence of negative energy. Your energy field absorbs energy like a sponge. 

​Spending time in the outside world can impact your energy. It’s important to clean and clear your energy field every day.

You can do this by smudging yourself, your home, and your car. 

A shower or any activity with water cleanses your chakra system, which is the basis of your energy field.

Too much negative energy can weigh on you over time. It will turn little things into big things. 

Instead of letting negative energy take over, be consistent in tending to your energy. It’s a form of self-care.

These are the main signs of negative energy around you. I’ve divided them into four categories: mental, spiritual, emotional and physical.

As you’re going through this list, try not to fixate on how they’re categorized. 

Emotional Signs of Negative Energy Around You

Emotional and spiritual signs overlap, so don’t focus too much on the categories. What matters is which ones stand out to you.

Negative Emotions

Your emotional health is the first indicator that something is off. If you sense bad vibes, there’s a reason for it. Trust it.

I always tell my clients, “you don’t need to know why. If something feels off, it is off. Period.” 

We often look for reasons to justify a choice we’re making as correct. This is another way you doubt your intuition.

There’s no question when you feel positive vibes. You feel it and it’s clear. The same goes for negative feelings. 

Instead of doubting it, or looking for a reason to make it true, trust it next time.

​You can then use this as a barometer to start trusting your intuition.

Low Self-Esteem

When you focus on your personal growth, you bring yourself back into alignment. 

You take your focus off of anyone outside of you and work to improve your life.

This increases your self-esteem and helps you build confidence over time. 

There is nothing more important than using your personal power to better yourself.

You have free will, and the sovereignty to exercise it. 

Once you realize how powerful your choices are, life changes exponentially. 

Feeling Heavy

Pay attention to your body language. Do you slump when you’re working or talking to people?

When you’re in a difficult situation, notice how your body language changes. 

Feelings of heaviness change our body posture.

Noticing how your body reacts to certain situations could help you narrow down the root cause of negative energy.

Intrusive Thoughts

Negative thoughts needn’t take over your life. People have more than 60,000 thoughts per day. 

Rather than trying to catch a negative thought, pay close attention.

What do you keep thinking about repeatedly? Which thought or idea keeps crossing your mind?

That’s the one you want to pay attention to. It’s easier to identify a negative mindset once you catch some of your repeating thoughts.

If the thoughts are negative or don’t make you feel good, you know what to work on.

Positive thoughts are as powerful. You may have an idea that brings you joy, act on it! Lean into the thoughts that make you feel happier. 

They are as important for your well-being.

Mental Health Issues

If negative self-talk is part of your life, it’s likely conditioning from childhood. 

Your inner dialogue becomes what you heard others say about you. When you internalize their words, it becomes your inner dialogue.

I call these, “storylines.” Stories aren’t necessarily true.

Talking down to yourself or bad about yourself can further lower your self-esteem.

If you use mantras or affirmations, you can begin to train yourself to speak in a more positive way. This isn’t a one-time fix. It is a powerful way to begin shifting your inner dialogue.

Can’t Focus

If you can’t focus, your mind is giving you negative feedback that something is pulling at your energy. 

The mind is actually the last point of contact energetically speaking. 

It means that your energy is spread in too many directions.  When you don’t have the full use of your energy, you’ll feel scattered.

Things like social media are energy drains. They don’t give, they take. They take your time, energy, attention and focus.

If you feel distracted it’s a telltale sign that your energy is elsewhere. Work to pay attention to your own thoughts. 

Where are they at the moment? What are they focused on?

​Start there, and begin shutting down energy drains. Every time you pull your energy back, you’ll feel more able to focus.

Not Hitting Your Goals

The good news is that there’s still time to hit your goals. This one harkens back to distraction.

Negative energy may be impacting you if you’re not working towards your goals.

You can try a black tourmaline crystal to ground you. Be sure to keep it somewhere on your body.

Negative spiritual energy likes to hideout in the home. 

Try smudging your office, or where you work especially if you work from home.

It’s even more important to smudge if you’re sharing any walls with strangers. Their energy will impact your space no matter what you do. 

Try putting black crystals like tourmaline, shungite, or onyx in the 4 corners of your home to ground it.

Spiritual Signs of Negative Energy Around You

Spiritual and emotional signs overlap. When spiritual energy is off, so are your emotions. 

Look at it kind of like your emotions are alerting you to a spiritual imbalance.

Nightmares or Night Terrors

Your subconscious mind communicates through your dreams. If you’re having nightmares, your unconscious mind has a message for you.

The best way to handle this is to keep a dream journal. 

When you wake up from a dream whether it’s good or bad, write it down in detail. Write down everything you remember. 

Next, look for symbols. Everything in your dream represents something. 

If you see the ocean, that’s a symbol. If the ocean is calm, it means your emotions are calm. 

If there was a storm, it means you’re dealing with emotional turmoil.

I like to use the website Dream Moods to investigate symbols. 

When you research each symbol, you’ll find a pattern in the story. This is what your subconscious mind is teaching you. 

When you start to understand the message, the bad dreams will end and you’ll get a good night’s sleep.

Bad Luck

Believe it or not, black magic can bring bad luck into your life. Evil eye energy is very real.

When someone is jealous of you or wants what you have, they talk behind your back and send negativity your way. That is negative energy.

If your life is full of bad luck, it’s worth doing a cord-cutting or energy clearing. 

You can work with a healer or ask Archangel Michael to cut the energetic cords.

Don’t forget to shield yourself. Shielding is placing a protective barrier of energy around yourself. 

I like to imagine a pyramid of gold light around myself. This brings plenty of positive energy into your space.

Exhaustion

If you’re always exhausted, you may be dealing with negative energy. Remember, negative energy is heavier. It weighs you down.

The easiest way to increase your energy levels is by ending energy drains. 

If you’re engaging in anything that drains your energy, cut it out of your life or change it in some way. There are a number of ways to do this.

If it’s an obligation that you can’t drop, find a way to enjoy it. Or limit your interaction with it in some way. Delegate it if you’re able.

At the very least, change your mind about it. The mind determines how you feel about something. 

Your emotions respond to what your mind says.

If you’re exhausted at home, look into feng shui principles. 

Simple shifts in your home can make a world of difference for your energy.

Feeling off

Many times you may take on other people’s energy without realizing it.

The first thing you want to do is make sure the energy is actually yours. If you feel off for no apparent reason, smudge yourself and your home. 

If you still feel off after clearing your energy, take on some other spiritual practices. Try something like meditation or yoga. 

Both of these ground and clear your energy.

Simple shifts can make a big impact. It begins with making changes to see what is helping you feel better.

Endless Negative Experiences

If you’ve been around toxic energy, it may feel like bad luck is following you.

These repeating patterns are like a vicious cycle.

It’s important to remember that when situations repeat, they stem from something unhealed. 

The reason they keep showing up is to get your attention.

This is where healing comes into the foreground. Working with a coach, healer or therapist can help you understand the root cause.

Repeating Patterns

On a spiritual level, you’ll want to get professional help. Work with someone who can help you see the soul lesson behind your patterns.

All these aspects are important to putting the repeating pattern in the past.

When you’re dealing with a lot of negative energy, it can be difficult to see the patterns. 

The first priority is to clear your energy and ground yourself. 

Once you’re feeling better and more neutral, you can take time to tune into the pattern. 

Physical Signs of Negative Energy Around You

Negative People

Negative people bring negative energies with them.

I don’t believe that a negative person is being that way intentionally. They probably have their trauma and wounding causing it. 

Having compassion but not taking on their energy is key. This is where boundaries come in. 

With good boundaries, you recognize someone else’s energy isn’t your burden to carry.

Physical Health Decline

This is one of the easiest imbalances to recognize. 

Your nervous system and immune system feeling off are indicators of negative energy.

When physical symptoms arise, the next logical step is to take physical action. 

This is where a lot of people shut down and it’s the worst time to do so.

Your body needs you! When you feel off, don’t hesitate to go to the Doctor. 

You can always check on the spiritual and emotional sides as well.

Toxic Inner Circle

Negative influences could be right in your inner circle. Sometimes the bad energy you let into your life is right under your nose.

​When you’re working towards self-improvement, others may not be. While you’re busy advancing, others may be staying the same.

If you’ve known the people in your inner circle for a long time, revisit the relationships. 

See if you still resonate with them and if they’re growing, too.

You may find that your once tight knot circle is now a source of discomfort.

Relationship Conflict

Relationship conflict is a sign of negative energy. It could be your energy or another person’s that is causing the dysfunction.

Although challenges are normal in a relationship, they shouldn’t outweigh the positive. 

A negative relationship is one where your self-esteem keeps going down.

When there are clear signs of trouble, work with a professional to determine the best way forward. 

This is a time when it’s appropriate to get an outside perspective.

Family Conflict

Conflict in a family situation can be more difficult to pinpoint. Usually, everyone is set in their ways, and comfortable with one another. 

This combined wth poor boundaries makes it a recipe for disaster.

Family members often feel comfortable doing things they wouldn’t do outside the home. 

There is also a lot of shame in most families, and room for improvement in communication.

Family conflict is one of the number one issues my clients face. It stems from family dynamics in childhood. 

To heal something like this, we need to look at your inner child and work on the dynamics you grew up with. 

It’s simple to make these changes but it isn’t easy. 

Generally, I work with clients anywhere from 12-18 months on resolving these issues.

Friend Conflict

Close friends tend to mimick the dynamics of family, because of the closeness. 

Although, it may be easier to end a friendship than it is a family relationship.

Follow the steps to audit your circle that we talked about above. 

Recognizing who brings toxicity into your life is the first step to resolving it.

This is a great opportunity open yourself up to more positive people.

More Clutter than Normal

Simple things like having a clean home can make a huge difference in your feelings of wellbeing.

When you clean and declutter on a regular basis, you’re creating more space.

When you let go of something, you make space for something new to enter your life. 

This is actually a metaphor for all areas of life! 

Surrender what no longer serves a useful purpose and you’ll create space for more positive things.
